eReader Comparison

Quick Summary MP3

WiFi 3G Overall

Kindle

$79

A great eReader, with e-ink technology, but the basicmodel. No keyboard, no audio capability (no MP3, no text to speech etc). Although the cheapest option, we think the more expensive versions offer better value. If you don't need music though this represents great value.

Kindle Touch

$99

Touchscreen capability, and audio. For a small amount more this represents much better value than the Basic Kindle, just for the audio alone. The touchscreen interface suits some users more than a keyboard. If your always near a WiFi network, or at least can be near one whenever ou want to buy a book, this is the best Kindle for you.

Kindle Touch 3G

$149

Same as the Kindle Touch but with 3G - so no need to be near a WiFi network to download your books. Useful if you out and about and not near free WiFi networks.

Kindle Keyboard

$139

Still a basic model, it lets you use a keyboard on the front. No touchscreen capability, but does have audio (MP3, text-speech).

Kindle Keyboard 3G

$139

Same as the Kindle keyboard, except you don't need to be near a wireless network to download books. Useful if you out and about and not near free WiFi networks.

Kindle Fire

Not really an eReader in the traditional sense - more of a web browser. Not reviewed on this site.

Barnes and Noble offer 2 eBook readers – the Nook and the Nook Color. Don’t be fooled by the might of Amazon – have a serious look at these eReaders before you make your choice – there’s many people who think these are a better option…

It uses the same e-ink technology as the Kindle, but has a small touchscreen navigaction window at the bottom that is color.

The main rival to the Kindle, its range of features is a bit outdated - theres no WiFi, no 3G, and no audio. However, its a well made machine, and you can buy books from places other than Amazon. You can also borrow books from the library.
